Do you feel discouraged? Is it hard to keep going? Are circumstances more than you can handle? There are days when I feel like that. So, how do you handle those times?

There is a hymn that I really like. It was written in 1905 by lyricist Civilla D. Martin and composer Charles H. Gabriel.

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

This is a good reminder for us that God is in control and He has a plan for us that is very good. Jer 29:11 says, “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans, not to harm you, but to give you a future and a hope.”

  Galatians 6:9 ESV /

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Let’s not be tempted to give up on others or on ourselves. God never gives up on us but He will not force us to keep going. We are allowed to choose. In Sunday School this Sunday, we were studying Matthew 7. In the first verse it says to ask, seek and knock and it will be done for you. Those words in the original language have the implication of, in your asking, keep asking; in your seeking, keep seeking; in your knocking, keep knocking. It is a continuous action of not giving up. It was also brought to our attention, if we remain in Christ and His word remains in us, what we ask for will be done. Jn 15:7.

We can be easily discouraged if we have false expectations or wrong motives. When we feel discouraged it is time for a heart check. We need to ask ourselves several questions. What am I feeling? Why am I feeling that? What does Jesus have to tell me about that? Am I discouraged because I have expectations that cannot be met? Do I have the right attitude? Do I have the right motives? Is what I am trying to achieve in line with what God is asking of me right now? Have I consulted with God on any of this? Who am I serving?

These are all very important questions, especially since the devil wants to defeat us and we can be easily led astray by the stuff we still have in our hearts. The cleaning of our hearts is not a once and done event. It is an ongoing daily challenge. As followers of Christ we must engage in daily heart check. Ask God why we get so easily discouraged or triggered. Then listen to Him. He will share with you what you need to know in order for you to keep moving forward in your spiritual life. It is so important to meet with God every day to study the Word and learn from Him. If you make that a scheduled part of your day, you will begin to find that your heart is changing and your burdens can be laid at His feet. Your heart will begin to align with His and your motives will become purer. He desires relationship with us. The more time you spend with Him, the more your mind will be on Him and His desires for you and your life. As you connect with God, you develop a love relationship that permeates every aspect of your life. There will be less discouragement; less pain; less burden; less distraction. Seek Him. Commune with Him. Build relationship with Him. He is the living God who cares about every detail of your life. He knows your concerns. Live as if you cannot live without Him. Life without Him is not worth living. Life, with Him active and dynamic in your life, is deep, rich and very fulfilling.

May your life be blessed with encouragement as you embark on the adventure of a true love relationship with God.
